Marcela Valladolid, the newest Food Network chef debuts Saturday with her show, “Mexican Made Easy.” Everyone loves Mexican food, and Marcela takes the spices and ingredients she grew up with in Tijuana and mixes them with traditional favorites. Hibiscus caramels and Chipotle hollandaise are just a few of her specialties.
This isn’t the first time Marcela’s been on TV. She’s done time on “Martha Stewart” and “The Apprentice” as well as the Discovery Channel En Espanol. She’s already published a cookbook, and many of the recipes featured on her new show will come from that book. Some of them, like her hollandaise, are international hodgepodges of flavor, but most of them are things that appeared on her table when she was growing up, like roasted Tomatillo Chilaquiles and spiced Mexican coffee.
Marcela lives in San Diego with her five year old son, Fausto, who loves cooking and eclectic food. Octopus Sashimi, Kalmata Olives and lamb are all favorites of her tiny foodie. He’s already cooking with his mom, becoming a part of a family tradition of great food. Marcela, on the other hand, wasn’t allowed in the kitchen until she was sixteen. Her family takes food very seriously, and, as she puts it, you had to earn your way into the kitchen. When she did, she learned from her mother and grandfather to craft delicious food with a kind of joyful enthusiasm that makes it easy to see how she ended up on TV.
Despite her great success, Marcela still works with children – teaching about food and cooking in the same school that her grandmother founded in her home town of Tijuana.
So skip the Taco Bell, help your little one develop a sophisticated palette, and give your dining out budget a break – fix some of Marcela’s delicious, fresh and healthy Mexican specialties at home.
