So long Brett Favre. It was a noble cause but in fitting fashion, you threw the ball away at the last moment, just like you did with the Packers. So now we will wait for the inevitable “retirement,” then the rumors of a come back, followed by the unretirement and then, if we’re lucky, a re-retirement. Never believe what Brett says the first time.
Now we know that Drew Brees and his New Orleans Saints will go up against Peyton Manning and his Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV. This will be an awesome game that anybody can watch and enjoy. But more on that next week when it is closer. For now we will have the NFL Pro Bowl to get us through the week. Unfortunately it is hardly a Pro Bowl because many high profile players have dropped out and the two best quarterbacks in the league are in the Super Bowl and won’t participate. They will still play it though and it is still fun to watch the league’s “best” play on the same sides.
Enjoy this second to last week of football everyone!
Top 3
NFL – Pro Bowl – AFC vs. NFC – Jan. 31 @ 7:30 pm
Even though most of the big name players who were in the playoffs will not be participating, there will still be great players getting to play with and against each other on these all-star teams. This is the first year that the NFL scheduled the game a week prior to the Super Bowl rather than a week after. They figured it would keep people interested and more prevalent. Translation: higher ratings. This is also the first time it is being played in Miami rather than Hawaii. Their thought was that it would give more people on the East Coast a chance to go to the game. Translation: more tickets sales. These two changes have also helped contribute to lack of top player involvement. I don’t like the changes and I don’t think they will be around for very long. there will be a lack of defense because no one wants to get hurt so look for some fun trick plays and high scores. The game will still be enjoyable and where else will you get to see Aaron Rogers drop back and either hand the ball off to Frank Gore or deciding to through deep to Miles Austin.
NBA – Atlanta Hawks at San Antonio Spurs – Jan. 27 @ 8:30 pm
The veteran San Antonio Spurs are chugging along in their season exactly how they usually do. Not the best in the league but consistent and with restraint so they can rest their stars for the last part of season and post season. The Atlanta Hawks are a very young team with a couple of veterans keeping them in check. They are doing better than anyone expected them to do and they are playing well as a team. They will be looking to gain a lot of confidence with a win over a good team and prove that they do belong at the top. The Spurs will most likely come out and play hard with everyone so they can grow as a team and “practice” against a playoff caliber team. Both teams have a lot to gain from a win and both are playing amongst the best in the league. It will be a hard fought and close game until the very end.
NHL – Chicago Blackhawks at San Jose Sharks – Jan. 28 @ 10:30
The Sharks are currently at the top of the league but the Blackhawks are nipping closely at their heels. Theoretically, this game could end up being for the top spot in the entire league. The season is more than half over and this is when it starts to get extremely competitive because every loss could end up meaning a spot in the playoffs. Conference standings are so close that only a few games stand between the first and eighth place teams. This means a lot to each team who are looking to gain home advantage over the other teams they will most likely end up facing in the playoffs. Momentum, confidence and bragging rights are at stake and sometimes that is more motivation than any trophy.
Quick Picks
- College Basketball – No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks at No. 9 Kansas St. Wildcats – Jan. 30 @ 7:30 pm - You don’t need to know anything except that they are two high ranked teams who are local rivals in a game with far reaching conference standings. Watch and see stars of tomorrow playing today.
- NBA – Boston Celtics at Orlando Magic – Jan. 28 @ 8 pm- A match up that we could very well see again in the playoffs featuring some of the top talent in all of the NBA. Should be fun to watch.
