The best-selling youth novels are coming to life! No, not those. The hot new books for kids is the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series from author Rick Riordan. There are six books in the New York Times best-selling series about Percy Jackson, a troubled teen trying not to get kicked out of school while discovering a big secret about his heritage. The first book called The Lightning Thief has been rendered as a movie slated to release on February 12.

Full of humor, action, and mythology, the Percy Jackson series gives readers that have had their fill of Harry Potter a new hero to follow. My young reading friend Peyton has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of each new book to our local library then quickly devouring them. Parents don’t have to deal with the whole magic issue, which opens up the possible audience considerably.

The trailer for Percy Jackson and the Olympians reels you in with a bit of mythology storytelling before it throws the hook at you… which I’m not telling. Once hooked, the action starts and you realize this isn’t just a kiddie movie. It looks to be one adults will be able to enjoy with or without kids.

Chris Columbus – yes, he of the two Harry Potter films – directs, so lovers of Chamber of Secrets and Sorcerer’s Stone will be able to get their heart-pounding action fix. Uma Thurman and Pierce Brosnan are the most recognizable names in the cast, but as I’ve said before, I’m finding myself enjoying movies without big names. The movie is rated PG for action violence and peril; some scary images and suggestive material; and mild language, so you might want to watch the movie sans kiddos first.

I don’t think I’m going to mind that one bit.
