Nancy_Kerrigan-MDFamous figure skaer Nancy Kerrigan is back in the news. This time it’s due to the tragic death of her father, Daniel, during a physical altercation with her brother, Mark.  Daniel Kerrigan died around 1:30am Sunday morning after a fight with his son that “became physical” when Mark reportedly grabbed his father by the throat. The police were called and when they arrived at the Kerrigan home they found Daniel unconscious on the kitchen floor. Mark, who was noticeably intoxicated, was belligerent and had to be pepper-sprayed and removed from his own home.

The question that will determine Mark’s fate is whether his father died because of their altercation or whether or not he died of a heart attack as Daniel’s wife, Brenda, originally told police. Autopsy results will give authorities a clearer picture, but Brenda’s cooperation will be key to learning the truth. There is some physical evidence of the fight, broken picture frames and other damage to the house, but without her testimony it will be difficult to know exactly what happened.

Mark has a long criminal history: he just got out of jail after serving a two and a half year sentence. Daniel is remembered as a wonderful man and caring father.

Nancy Kerrigan and her father are familiar faces from the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympic Games where Nancy won a Silver Medal in figure skating.  Of course, most of us remember her more for the strange attack on the skater during pre-games practice by the husband of skating rival Tonya Harding.  In January 2004, Kerrigan was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia.
