Nadya Suleman doesn’t sleep much, which isn’t a surprise for a single parent of fourteen kids, eight of whom are having their first birthday today. Nadya and her family rocketed into the spotlight last year when she gave birth to living octuplets, a rare feat in itself. The fact that the babies are all still alive and health, one year later, makes them totally unique. The Suleman octuplets are, in fact, the worlds longest living set octuplets to date.
And at twelve months, they’re starting to become a lot of work. Jeff Czech, Suleman’s attorney, says that up until this point they’ve been fairly manageable – “For all this time, for the most part, they were laying around in a crib.” Now that they’re hitting the age of mobility, they’re going to be a handful to put it mildly.
Lucky for Suleman, she’s got three full time nannies to help her out with her brood. Suleman produced the her Octuplets by in vitro fertilization. She already had six children, four single births and a set of twins, conceived via in vitro. The world’s initial awe over the eight tiny miracle babies quickly turned to scorn for their mother when it became clear that the single, unemployment mom was already supporting her six children on food stamps and public aid when she chose to undergo in vitro for a sixth time and became pregnant with the Oct’s. As of this moment, Suleman has made it clear that the state of California is no longer supporting her, or her children. She seems to have made enough money in TV and book deals to keep herself in diapers, at least for the time being.
Suleman is planning a quiet birthday party for the famous eight – just the family, the nannies and eight tiny cakes.
