“Glee” is preparing to air in Japan and, to help promote the show, Fox is running a set of funny and adorable TV commercials starring retired Hawaiian sumo wrestler Akebono Taro, the first American-born wrestler to reach the highest rank in sumo.
In this commercial, a young sumo wrestler is defeated by his opponent who then gloats and calls him a “loser” with the trademark “Glee” “L” to the forehead. Akebono offers inspiration to the defeated wrestler with a heart felt rendition of ‘Don’t Stop Believin” — complete with choreography and backup dancers.
Akebono would probably get scathing criticism from the cast of “Glee” on his pitch and delivery of the performance, but as one of the tallest and heaviest wrestlers in recorded history, it wouldn’t be to his face.
The commercials are just as charming as the show “Glee” itself, and it’s sure to be just as big of a hit overseas as it is here in the US.
