facebook-MDFrances Simpson, a fifty-one year old housewife from Market Drayton, Shropshire in the UK, saw her father, Tony Macnauton, for the last time on the day her mother left him. Frances was three years old at the time. She started looking for her father at age eighteen, but, not knowing that he had changed his name and remarried, she never succeeded in finding him.

She had all but given up when a friend started researching Frances’ family tree. That research led to the discovery that Frances had a half sister – nineteen year old Kimberly Macnauton.  Frances contacted Kim on Facebook. Her message read: “This will be a bit of a shock but I think I’m your sister.”

Kim was stunned. She replied: “Do you want to talk to my dad? He’s sitting right next to me.”

Soon father and daughter were chatting, and not long after that they met for the first time in forty-eight years.  It turned out that each of them had a copy of the same photograph, one of the few of the two of them together.  That treasured picture wasn’t all they shared – Frances and Tony have the same sense of humor and like the same vacation spots. They’re both thrilled to be reunited and Tony is especially thrilled to find that he has five grandchildren and a great-grandchild that he never knew about.

And you thought your Facebook account wasn’t good for anything more than harvesting crops in Farmville and finding out when your coworkers had their last latte.
