Super_Bowl_logo_300x300It all comes down to this.  The biggest and best sporting event of the year.  The Super Bowl is here and ready to be one for the record books.  When the New Orleans Saints meet the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday it will be the culmination of the entire NFL season and a champion will be awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy.  It is an afternoon where sitting in front of the television is a must because even when the game is not on, the commercials will be just as memorable.

This week will be filled with talk about the game too.  From office pools to every person weighing in on their pick, you will be overwhelmed with the amount of coverage.  Everything will be scrutinized and reviewed during the week and sports reporters will jump on any little piece of information and blow it way out of proportion.  But once the ball is kicked off, none of it will mean anything and after 60 minutes of play, only one team will be left happy.  Soak it up while it lasts because after the game we are left with nothing until next season.

Other professional leagues know the power of the NFL and will basically leave them be and not have any big games until next week.  But one the NFL is over with, the NBA will get to it’s All-Star Game and soon be in the playoffs.  Football steps aside and basketball comes to the spotlight.  March is just around the corner now and soon the Madness will sweep the land.

Top 3

1. NFL – Super Bowl XLIV – New Orleans Saints vs. Indianapolis Colts – Feb. 7 @ 6:25 pm

Drew Brees and his New Orleans Saints are the Cinderella Story this year looking to take their high powered, flashy offense into Miami and beat up on the Colts.  But veteran (and probably one of, if not the, greatest quarterbacks of all time) Peyton Manning will take his smart and machine like offense and stellar defense into the fight and probably do a pretty good job of stopping the Saints.  Each team had a chance to go undefeated this season but chose to rest their players to make sure longevity in the playoffs.  Looks like they were correct.  This should be a very high scoring game (projected to be the highest ever)  Everything surrounding this game will be a spectacle from the opening coin toss, to half time and then the closing ceremonies.  With so many things going on and nearly 20 million people set to watch it unfold live, you never know what could happen to make you remember this years Super Bowl.  Two words: Wardrobe. Malfunction.

2. NBA – Miami Heat at Cleveland Cavaliers – Feb. 4 @ 8 pm

Two of the biggest stars in the game today meet to see who’s team will be the best that night.  While Lebron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers are at the top of the league standings and Dwyane Wade and his Heat are not, this game still means a lot.  Cleveland needs as many wins as it can get to try and earn the best record in the league and the resulting home court advantage through the playoffs.  Miami could use a big win against Lebron to gain momentum and perhaps earn a shot into the playoffs.  The pride of the two Team USA members are also on the line and each will look to show up the other.  An interesting side note is to also know that Lebron and Dwyane are good friends who have openly talked about negotiating with teams together next year to make sure the end up on the same team.  Watch and see who has the better night and if perhaps they give us a glimpse at their friendship with some on court antics.

3. NHL – Phoenix Coyotes at Chicago Blackhawks – Feb. 6 @ 8:30 pm

Last year the Phoenix Coyotes were in complete turmoil, as an organization as well as a team.  Their head coach, the Great One, Wayne Gretzky stepped down and the team actually wanted to file for bankruptcy.  The league did ot allow this as it would most likely lead to the team moving away, which the league did not want.  Well I guess things have worked out for the Coyotes because now they are one of the best teams in the league and looking to take the underdog magic that seems to reside in Phoenix these days (i.e. Arizona Cardinals) and make it to the playoffs and beyond.  But the Blackhawks are a long time hockey power and don’t want to allow the upstart team to gain any sort of foundation and momentum.  They will look to crush the Coyotes and further assert themselves at the top of the standings.  Watch and see if the young Coyote team can out play the veteran Blackhawks.

Quick Picks

  • NFL – Since you probably didn’t see it, here are the results and replay of this years NFL Pro Bowl.
  • NBA – Chicago Bulls at Atlanta Hawks – Feb. 5 @ 8 pm – These two young teams are trying to establish a footing at the top of the league, beating up on each other will give them a lot of future psychological momentum that every coach loves to get.
