Super Bowl Smuper Bowl. The REAL action yesterday was at the Animal Planet Puppy Bowl.  Who could resist the chance to watch a gang of rescued puppies playing their own version of one of America’s favorite pass times?

The Puppy Bowl has been around since 2005, when the Yule Log Christmas program inspired producers to create a similar passive viewing television show for their Super Bowl counter programing.  The Puppy Bowl features a team of puppies, playing in a Model stadium with commentary from Jeff Bordner.  The “bowl cam” provides shots upward through the transparent bowl built into the stadium floor so that the audience can treasure the hilarious view of puppies drinking.  The team is given a variety of chew-toys to play with – when a puppy drags one of the football-shaped toys into the end zone, they’ve made a “puppy touchdown.”  Peeing on the field, on the other hand, will earn them a “penalty.”

This year’s starting line up:

Addison - Maltese / Yorkshire Terrier – 15 weeks old.
Bandit - Border Collie Mix – 10 weeks old.
Bandit the Husky – Husky Mix – 9 weeks old
Bear - English Springer Spaniel / Border Collie Mix – 11 weeks old
Blaze - Australian Shepherd Mix – 10 weeks old.
Carson - German Shepherd Mix – 11 weeks old.
Chamomile - Boxer Mix – 13 weeks old.

The Bissell Kitty Half-Time show features kitten’s taking the field for half an hour.  This years Puppy Bowl also featured bunny rabbit cheerleaders and, for the first time ever, the Twizzler blimp, manned by a rouge hamster crew.

The Puppy Bowl has raised its viewership by more than 40% since its inception. It puts this popularity to good use by teaching its viewers how to rescue dogs, and how important it is to provide good homes to puppies like the Bowl players, who are all rescues themselves.
