Empty_refrigerator-MDThe State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program, aka, “Cash for Refrigerators” is coming to a state near you. In fact, it may already be in effect, depending on where you live.  This latest “green” oriented stimulus program is being funded with $300 million dollars of federal stimulus money. It’s starting at different times in different states because each state is operating its own version of the program, which means different start dates, budgets and rules.

Generally buyers can earn rebates of $50 to $250 for buying new Energy Star qualified products to replace older, energy inefficient appliances. If it gets as much attention as the “Cash for Clunkers” program, it could run out of money fast.  So, if you want to get cash for your fridge, better stay on top of when your state’s program starts.

Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Kansas, New Jersey, Oregon, Vermont, and Wisconsin have already started their programs. The rest of the country will roll the programs out over the course of the next few months. Look for these start dates:

February: Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Michigan, New York, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands

March: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, American Samoa, Northern Marianas Islands

April: Alabama, California, District of Columbia, Florida, Hawaii, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Guam

Each state has different rules.  Which appliances are eligible, where you have to recycle your old appliance, even where you need to buy your new one will vary from state to state so make sure you know what your state’s policy is before you go on a new appliance spending spree.  But, new green models can save you a lot of money, rebate or no, not to mention doing a good thing for Planet Earth.
