Healthy Pick/Makes Me Sick: Dunkin’ Donuts

By Sarah Matheny on February 9th, 2010

Every Tuesday, KidGlue presents “Healthy Pick/Makes Me Sick” where Sarah Matheny takes a popular restaurant’s menu and uncovers the most healthy and least healthy items on the menu. This week:  Dunkin’ Donuts.

Being a West Coaster, I had no idea about the East Coast obsession with Dunkin’ Donuts, and I certainly wasn’t hip to the fact that they had a rivalry with my beloved Starbucks. But Dunkin’ is invading the nation, one annoying Rachael Ray ad at a time.  Could a restaurant that specializes in Homer Simpson’s ultimate weakness have a choice for those with a healthier lifestyle? Let’s find out, shall we?

Makes Me Sick:  Sausage, Egg & Cheese Croissant

It doesn’t take a scientist to figure out that this is a terrible choice.  With 640 calories and 43 grams of fat (17 of which are saturated), you’d be better off having TWO cake donuts for breakfast and you’d still have almost 100 calories to spare.

Healthy Pick:  Egg White Veggie Flatbread

Any donut shop that offers some form of vegetables gets points in my book.  This sandwich has under 300 calories, only 9 grams of fat and 11 grams of protein.  Though the ingredient list is a mile long, and green peppers come in about thirty ingredients from the top, it definitely isn’t the worst fast food pick you are going to come by.  Heck, it might even be healthier than a Rachael Ray meal!

You can't throw a stone without hitting three Dunkin Donuts in my Pennsylvania area. It's ridiculous. That being said, the flatbread sandwiches are actually quite yummy. :)
