Arizona Dog Named Blue is a Real Life Lassie

By Bridget Tyler on February 22nd, 2010

A four legged hero is credited with saving a toddler this weekend.  Victoria Bensch is a very lucky little girl, mostly because when she wandered away from her Prescott, Arizona yard on Thursday evening her loyal dog followed her.  Blue, a  Queensland Heeler kept Victoria warm through the 30 degree night until rescuers spotted her from a helicopter Friday morning.

After being missing for more than fifteen hours, Victoria’s feet were swollen and her body was covered in dirt, scratches and she had mild frostbite, but, thanks to Blue, she’s going to be fine. “We have to give a lot of credit to Blue, the dog,” Kim Rayfield told the local NBC news affiliate. “He pretty much stayed with her all night and I’m hoping that’s what kept her warm and safe.” Blue is also credited with attracting Victoria’s rescuers by running through the ravine where the little girl was lying, catching searcher’s eyes.

Heelers are an intelligent bred, developed for herding cattle long distances over difficult Australian terrain. They are  independent, but have strong attachments to their owners and are very protective.  They are energetic, but not aggressive, making them great dogs for families with children.
