Healthy Pick/Makes Me Sick: Airport Offerings

By Sarah Matheny on March 2nd, 2010

Every Tuesday, KidGlue presents “Healthy Pick/Makes Me Sick” where Sarah Matheny takes a popular restaurant’s menu and uncovers the most healthy and least healthy items on the menu. This week: the airport Food Court.

After a long, cold winter, the family and I are packing up and heading to Hawaii for the week.  Though I have enough granola bars, dried fruit and packaged nuts shoved in my carry-on to last us a hike up Kilimanjaro, I know there will come a point this week, if not tomorrow morning, when we are drawn into the allure of the airport food court, the $8 snack options at the gift shop or even Starbucks.  But is there anything worth going through airport security twice for?

Makes Me Sick:  Panda Express Orange Chicken Meal

There’s nothing worse than gut rot for a five hour flight, which is pretty much guaranteed after 1,775 calories worth of Orange Chicken, BBQ pork, fried rice and a Coke.  Maybe you should pony up $12 for some Alka Seltzer in the airport bookstore while you are at it.

Healthy Pick: Jamba Juice Protein Berry Shake with Soy Protein Boost

If anything, you’ll get some starchy pretzels on your flight, so balance it out in just 270 calories.  This shake will give you some fresh fruit and 15 grams of protein for muscle repair, you know, from that kid kicking you in the back in the row behind you.
