Our Favorite Dr. Seuss Books

It’s sad, I know. I’m known as “The Cat in The Hat” to many of the children in my small town because I’m such a Dr. Seuss nut. I print stuff out from Suessville and play games there. Every March, I dress up as the infamous cat and read books from the beloved children’s author at the local library.  It’s a tradition going on its fourth year now. Besides being wonderful beginning reader books, the Seuss canon is full of life lessons our children need to hear. This year, celebrate Read Across America Day (the holiday created to honor Dr. Seuss) by reading one of my favorite Dr. Seuss books.

Horton Hatches an Egg – Seuss’ fifth book, about an elephant that happens upon an irresponsible bird. Lesson learned: Stick to it!

Horton Hears a Who! – Horton’s ears lead him on an adventure of discovering what’s important in life. Lesson learned: Stand up for your friends.

Green Eggs and HamSam-I-am thinks he has the best dish ever. Lesson learned: Try new things.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go!The last book published before Dr. Seuss’ death in 1991 tells about a journey that only you can map out. Lesson learned: Life is sometimes hard, but you can do anything if you try.

Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You? – Mr. Brown is a veritable cacophony. Lesson learned: Onomatopoeia is fun!

Fox in Sox – How many rhyming words can you fit into one sentence? Lesson learned: Even fun things can be overdone.

The Cat in the Hat – A mischievous cat visits on a rainy day and messes abound. Lesson learned: Fun is good, but be respectful and clean up after yourself.
