High School Cancels Prom Because Of Lesbian Student

By Akela Talamasca on March 11th, 2010

There will be no prom for the students of Itawamba Agricultural High School in Mississippi, because the school board has decided to cancel it. Why? Because 18 year old Constance McMillen has plans to bring a female date. So, in a display of seasoned maturity, they’re taking their ball and going home.

“Due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events, the Itawamba County School District has decided to not host a prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School this year.” First of all, since when is a prom considered part of the educational process? Second of all, is it really that big a deal if two girls are dancing together? I don’t know if you’ve been a chaperone at a prom recently, but girls already tend to flock together and dance. Third of all, has anyone complained?

This is such a huge and obvious violation of a student’s rights it’s nearly unbelievable. Dan Savage, author of the referring article and famous for his column Savage Love, has taken the step of providing the names and contact information of the school’s administrative board, publishing them right in the article. He exhorts us all to “Keep it respectful, but let them hear from you (emphasis Savage’s).” The idea is to show the leaders of Itawamba Agricultural what a real distraction looks like.

Savage also points out that there is a possibility for McMillen’s safety to be in danger, as other students might blame her for the loss of their prom. This could be the beginning of something ugly. We’ll keep our eyes on it.

So you speak of individuals with special needs and their ability to close down a prom. Did these so called special needs individuals realize they had such power ???? Congrats to them !!!!! We all would love to have such control.. such power right ? These individuals you speak of … do not have that power nor did they ever have the power to stop such a special occasion. An occasion that is time honored through so many years. The ones that stopped this Prom are the ones you need to be mad or angry at. The so called special needs individuals have the right to dress respectivley and be who they are at this dance. They are true to themselves and that is a damn good thing. They want to be just like you and I . But who are we ? What is to say we are right ? What makes them wrong ? Are you them… do you walk in their shoes or live their lives ? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. So accept that we are all different and we are human . Treat each individual as they are as equally important and stop the rules that discriminate against gays and lesbians. Stop this and stop this now ! As far as the individual who said these girls are the cause because of their special needs. To clarify that comment. I am a teacher of special needs students at our high school. These special needs students can not feed themselves, speak, do any personal hygiene, can not walk, or tell us if they are sick, or sad, mad ect… But they have more sense then you do !!!! That is what the term special needs would really mean in my mind !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Not a girl wanting to wear a tux to look nice for her date whom will look beautiful I am sure. If anyone has a special need problem…. lets just say you do….. Your brain cells have failed you ….. lets just say you are short a few !!!! By the way… my daughter went through this and she also was the first student to get the Matthew Sheppard Scholarship in our school. She fought and I fought to have her receive this award on stage while other scholarships were being presented too. It happened and nearly half the student body stood up while this happened ! Yes my daughter made a difference and has so many friends who respect her for being just who she is… just like the young ladies that are fighting and suing the school. You go girls and God bless you both !!!!! I am and will always be proud to be a mom of a lesbian …… Why ????????? Because God made her and no one is above God !!!!! I say get over it and more power to the gays and lesbians of the world !!!!!! Love ya all !!!!!!!!!!!
