Child care is a fact of life for single parents and families that find that they just can’t make ends meet on a single income. For this reason, child care management is in high demand as the pace in society increasingly requires two incomes to pay all of the bills. Luckily, there are many options available to parents to give their children the care that they need while they are away at work.
Types of Child Care
There are a few different types of care available to choose from starting with babysitting and after school care programs right up to hiring a live in nanny possible. Those who are lucky enough to have retired parents that live in the same city may also have them to call upon at a reduced rate. However, for most people paying for child care is a necessary expense to be able to work while ensuring that young children are cared for. In this instance, it’s best to hire someone with impeccable references, experience and even a child care certification for those who have babies and toddlers.
In most cases, a child care provider working out of their own home needs to have child care insurance in order to have a legitimate child care business. This ensures that your children are protected in the case of an accident and require treatment at the hospital for injuries. Many providers will also issue receipts for their services that can be claimed as expenses against your income in many states.
The drawback to working with a full time child provider is that they may not have enough room to accommodate all of your children, they may have a schedule that doesn’t work with yours or they may simply be too expensive for your budget. In this case it may be preferable to have someone who is merely looking for a child care job for some extra money each week, like a babysitter from your neighborhood.
Babysitters
Hiring a babysitter is a great alternative for those who can’t afford a nanny or full time child care provider operating out of their own home. However, it’s important to find someone who is trustworthy and has a great track record. Saving a lot of money by hiring the local neighborhood teen to baby sit your children after school is fine so long as your kids are well cared for and that the sitter isn’t abusing any privileges while they are in your home. Having a relative or close friend with a teenager that is interested in child care can help reduce the risk, but nothing is guaranteed.
The risk is greatest with babies and young toddlers because they cannot speak for themselves if the babysitter mistreats or even neglects them while under their care. Saving some money isn’t worth it if you don’t have the peace of mind that your children are safe in the care of a teenager. Always check references and request a police check for any domestic employees that work in close proximity to your children. When it comes to your children, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
