Sean Kenney’s Lego Zoo Highlights Endangered Species

By Bridget Tyler on April 13th, 2010

Thousands of beloved and ecologically vital species are endangered by loss of habitat, over hunting and pollution.  World renowned Lego artist Sean Kenney wants to make the next generation aware of these creatures plight before they disappear entirely. That’s why he’s constructed his latest exhibit, called “Creatures of Habitat: A Gazillion-Piece Animal Adventure,” for the Philadelphia Zoo.  The 34 animal statues, constructed entirely in Lego’s, took more than a year to complete.  It’s the largest project that Kenney has ever undertaken.

“I love being able to explain serious problems in ways that kids can understand them,” says Kenney. Each sculpture in the exhibit also features descriptions of why and how the animal in question is endangers.  The exhibit also offers suggestions on how kids and their families can help protect threatened animals.  Recycling, environmentally responsible buying and taking a bike instead of a car all feature high on the list of things that can be done to protect the planet right now.

Vikram Dewan, the zoo’s president, says, “Every child – and adult, for that matter – can relate to the universal desire to protect our planet, this place we call home.  A key principle of our new exhibit is showing how our world fits together and how we all connect with it.”

Five more Lego-certified professionals will be creating other endangered species to feature in displays like this throughout the year.  Organizers and artists all hope that their efforts will encourage children of all ages to get involved in saving these animals and the world that they, and we, depend on.
