The hard working staff of the White House got to spend a little extra time with their kids on Thursday – it was national Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. For the children of the White House, this was no average day at work with mom or dad, stuck reading or doing homework while their parents went about their business. The kids were treated to a tour and activities with many of the different experts who work in the White House.
These included a demonstration from the Secret Service, a healthy snack cooking lesson with the pastry chef, a visit to the White House athletic center and a bee keeping and composting lesson in the first lady’s garden. The kids also got to hang out with Bo, the first dog, who they were thrilled to see join the party.
Bo wasn’t the only Obama who stopped by the tour, Michelle Obama spent about an hour answering their questions about life in the White House. The kids asked about the garden, her campaign against childhood obesity and whether she could add making recess longer to her list of goals. The first lady ducked that last one, but she did answer a question about her family’s favorite animal – the tiger.
According to the first lady, the Obamas discuss tigers at least once a week. Apparently Malia, 11, is concerned about what her father’s administration is doing to save the big cats, who are an endangered species. ”He tells her he’s working on it and there are a lot of people who are thinking about it,” she said. “but I think, the Obama household, we’re trying to save the tigers.”
