“Supernanny” Jo Frost Planning to Retire

By Bridget Tyler on April 29th, 2010

Jo FrostAccording to Variety, the star of ABC’s reality TV hit “Supernanny,” Jo Frost, wants to quit after the 2010-2011 season.  Frankly, having watched the show we can hardly blame her.  Frost started her televised crusade against poor parenting and out of control kids in 2004 in the UK.  The show came to the US in 2005.  Six years of whipping families who would try the patience of Mother Theresa into shape seems like more than enough for anyone to handle.

“It feels like the right time for me to end my reign as the Supernanny,” Frost said.  ”I’ve lived out of a suitcase for the past five years, visiting 47 states for the how.  It’s time to settle down in one place for the time being.”

Frost’s contract with ABC reportedly includes an additional season, but whether or not the network will bother on insisting that she finish that contract is unclear.  The once popular show’s ratings have dipped and are continuing to drop.

“Supernanny” has reached something like icon status over the last five years, inspiring spoofs on other series that range from “South Park” to “Doctor Who” and at least one knock off – Fox’s “Nanny 911.”  The show airs in more than 50 countries and has local spin offs in several more, including Germany, Brazil, Poland and Israel.  Even if “Supernanny” goes off the air, Frost won’t be giving up on her career as a child rearing expert.  She has another UK television show, which is currently in it’s second season, called “Jo Frost: Extreme Parental Guidance” and she makes frequent talk show appearance, which will continue, “Supernanny” or no.
