Tea Cup Pigs the Latest Pet Craze

By Christie on April 30th, 2010

baby tea cup pigTea cup pigs, or micro pigs as they’re sometimes known, are making a break into the homes and hearts of more and more people in the U.K. And no wonder! They’re adorable!

These tiny teacup-sized piggies are born weighing about 9 ounces — a little more than half a pound, and grow to be the size of a cocker spaniel at about 60 pounds. According to breeder Jane Croft, micro pigs are a cross between pot-bellied , Tamworth, Kune Kune and Gloucester Old Spot breeds, and they make great pets.

Says Croft, “They make fantastic pets. They’re really clean. They’re highly intelligent and just love to be loved. They give so much back to you.”

“People love pigs so much, but it’s almost impossible to keep a full-grown pig in the house,” Croft explained. “Now that we’ve gotten them down to this size, they’ve become extremely popular.”

Could tea cup pigs become the new must-have pet in the U.S? Rupert Grint (aka Ron Weasley of the Harry Potter franchise) bought two teacup pigs from Croft earlier this year — will state-side celebs adopt the new trend?

These little piggies are undeniably cute! But are teacup pigs really the next big pet craze? Would you let your kids bring home a teeny tiny piggy?
