Teacher Beats Student

By Christie on May 12th, 2010

Houston’s Harris County Sheriff’s Office is investigating reports of a teacher beating a student at Jamie’s House Charter School — and the proof is in this shocking video.

For almost one full minute, 40-year-old special education teacher Sherri Davis appears to kick, pull and punch a 13-year-old student while classmates cheer and laugh. Captured by a student using a cell phone, here is the ugly, ugly proof of the incident.

Says a Jamie’s House school spokesperson, “Obviously when we saw the video there was no doubt that the teacher would be terminated.”

The teacher was placed on leave after the child’s mother notified school administrators of her son came home with bruises and a black eye, and was officially terminated on Monday.

While Jamie’s House is a charter school for students for disciplinary problems, the spokesperson said that no matter what the boy may have done to provoke the teacher, he didn’t deserve the physical assault from the teacher.

As a parent, what would you do in this situation? Do you think termination from her job is enough punishment for Sherri Davis, or should she be charged with assault, or more? What responsibility does the school’s administration have in all of this?

  • Jeff

I don’t think she should have been terminated. The kid probably deserved it. He looks like punk black kid…

  • Exuse me, Jeff?

Excuse me? No kid deserves to be beaten, especially by a teacher, especially if they already have disciplinary issues. Shut up, please.

  • Cathy Nichols

THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS, I HOPE CRIMINAL CHARGES WILL BE BROUGHT AGAINST HER.

  • AAyles

Jeff, you are ignorant, disrespectful and everything that’s wrong with our society. You’re delusional if you think this type of behavior is acceptable – God forbid you ever have children of your own.

  • Will

I think the teacher was justified. The kids need to be beaten to a pulp. If they would of never taken the paddle out of the schools, this child wouldn’t be in this type of school to begin with.

  • TN

If that handicapped girl he beat up prior to this was your daughter, you’d be standing behind this teacher 100%. Corporal punishment isnt to used enough anymore. Rolling him around on the floor may not have been the best approach but, what would you have done in her place?? Would he have been punished at home, probably not, which would be why he is in Jamie’s House in the first place. Suspension from school is just be a few days vacation for a delinquent child that picks on handicapped children. This teacher should be punished but, so should this kid.

  • momma

wow he looks like a bad kid but it still dnt give the right for a teacher to hit a child but tell da mother so she can beat hiz azz but the problem with dat is most parents are scared because someone will call childern n families on them and now a days kids r acting up and back then you didnt hear much about things like this cause kids got beat by the mom grandma father grandfather aunites and all….. and these kids are the childern of the future wow

  • Lee

How does he look like a bad kid?? Why, because he’s black? This tape shows nothing but a grown woman beating up on a kid. No excuse. If he was your kid (and not black) would you be so quick to say he deserved it? No kid deserves to have this treatment. If you read the other articles about this, you will see that that the student who filmed this said the kid was not doing anything wrong to cause this.

Grow up and quit showing your ignorance.

LEE: he did do sumthing wrong, you must not have read the part where he kept teasing a female sped student/ beat her up(i was told this but dunno if it is true) (and by the way this teacher snapped, he prob made fun of her often) so get your facts right before you comment.

MY VIEW ON THIS: I do not believe that any student should be verbally or physically attacked by their teacher. I do not care how bad the child is. Suspend them, talk to their parents, send them to a special school (we have a school for kids with horrible behavior and let me tell you they listen to the teachers and adults in there. It runs like a jail) I work at a sch0ol and I know how kids push ur buttons constantly but this should never have happened. She needs to go to prison for beating up a minor.

  • WTF

I hate it when people use the stupid “because he is black” shit. get over yourself, it is not about race you moron. (directed towards LEE)

To all defending the hoodlum student:

Jamie’s House is an ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL. This is a school problematic kids get sent to as a last resort before expulsion and/or juvenile detention. Listen to the commentary of the other students at the end of the video. The hoodlum ATTACKED A DISABLED STUDENT. It may not be the teacher’s place to administer the @$$ whooping, but I’d be willing to bet my last dollar that the reason this kid was in the school in the first place was due to not enough @$$ whoopings at home.

Maybe if parents will stop letting their children grow up feral, incidents like this will be a thing of the past.

As a teacher, I have, at times, had students that I thought seriously needed attitude adjustment – but is is not my place to give it. For many students, school is the one safe place they have, and to violate that safety and trust, no matter the provocation, shows a lack of personal restraint and professionalism. As for the comments that the student needed corporal punishment at home, that’s probably where he learned the bullying behaviour in the first place.
The emotional damage this did to the students who witnessed it, as well as the damage to the credibility of all teachers, I don’t care to consider.
Should she be terminated – definitely
Should there be charges – yes
Should her license be revoked – I hope so. If we, as teachers, do not act as appropriate roll models for our students, we have no business in schools.
Finally, if the student was harming another student, the teacher should have stopped the behaviour and sent for help; the school could then expel the student and file assault charges against him. Maybe then the student could get professional help, not just “alternative” help.

I am a teacher, parent, and my husband and I mentor many boys in alternative schools. More often than not, they have ended up in this situation due to poor choices made by parents. Often single mothers are left to raise boys because of their or the father’s poor choices. That being said, the choices one makes once in that situation can steer a child in one direction or the other. Unfortunately, when a woman is raising a boy, he often does not receive the authoritative discipline and restraint necessary to prevent him from becoming delinquent. HOWEVER, some mothers realize this deficiency early and do what is necessary to keep their foot far enough in the boy’s behind that he DOES learn respect for rules and authority. Apparently, that was not the case in this instance. Unfortunately, when a kid has lacked discipline in its proper context, it does not negate his need for it. I think his parents(especially his father if he is absent) shoulder much of the blame here. While I do not condone teachers beating up kids, if he is not coddled for this situation, but it taught where he was wrong, it could possibly send him in the right direction. Sometimes the only things that can help a child’s behavior are physical reprecussions. If they are denied that in a loving context from their parents, SOMEONE will give it to them in a not-so-loving way.

Her actions are clearly, obviously, indisputably criminal. She should be prosecuted and appropriately punished.

    Well, well, well……….
Where were the cell phone camera’s when the handicapped girl was being accosted? Too bad they didn’t catch it in time. This teacher has an extremely hard and dangerous job. The boy accosted another human being and will do it again and again and again. Yelling at him will not work. He is beyond talking to. They probably had no security at that school. I’m not saying what she did was perfect but unless you have the money to help this school with perfect security or police force it’s best not to judge. It’s scary to see children attack one another and you are the only adult around to fight for the true victim. He was being a predator. He chose that stance. He chose to fight. The teacher was protecting the girl by fighting for her. That is what I see.

  • Tara

I bet if the teachers could give beat downs in school these kids would be perfect little angels. Bad kids become bad adults cause they dont want to listen. When he pulls a gun to your head have sympathy then.

This video shows a teacher who is totally in the wrong. I would say that the boy should be sent to the Principal’s office to stand facing into a corner. In 1952 my third grade teacher spanked me in front of the whole class and pinched my seat so hard that it left a bruise. This was her warped way of celebrating my birthday. I never celebrated another birthday until I turned 21. My daughter had one truly wonderful teacher in K-6, being treated respectively brought out the same behavior in my daughter. Each school in this system was appointed one group of the various problem children with our school getting the anti-social psycho-psychopathic ones. Everytime the boy was “mainstreamed into regular classes he would chase & terrorize the girls in the first and second grade. My daughter, wearing her brand new hooded winter coat with fake fur trimming around the face, came home from school with the edge of her hood all chewed and dried and stiff with his saliva . He was sent back to special ed. My grandson has had a tough time since preschool. In HEADSTART they stood him in an empty room, got every large around women in the school to surround him. He was terrified and when his Mom was finally called at work all she could hear was his sobbing uncontrollably. The teacher should not only lose her job but have her teaching license revoked. A charge of child abuse with jail time should be a part of her sentence.

I really can’t help but laugh at the outrage that some parents in this panel are having over the actions of this underpaid, overworked, teacher. I can bet money that this was not this kid’s 1st offense and while maybe she could have gone about it a different way I stand 100% behind this teacher. He was not getting beat up, and I seriously doubt he had a black eye and furthermore his mother should be outraged that her child is making fun of handicapped kids and should be have been right in line to kick his disrespectful behind. Instead I am sure she’s going to file a lawsuit and more than possibly win because her brute of a son doesn’t know how to act.

OMg Jeff- did u really just write that down- wow- some peoples f**kin kids!!!

  • Joe Reader

The kid was just engaging in TNB and the response was TNB. Please just go back to Africa and leave the rest of us civilized races alone.

  • jasmin

WOW! The “civilized” race is the human race! I cannot believe the bigotry and racism of the lower primates who were apparently trained how to type. Biologically, the word race itself has no basis when applied to the human population (I am an anthropologist, this is the official stand of the AAA), the concept was invented by those trying to justify unjustifiable treatment of their fellow brothers and sisters (I assume most of those racism remarks were made by Judeo-Christian people whose Bible instructs them that we are all brothers and sisters).

As a teacher in California, I can tell you for certain that we are raising undisciplined and unhappy sociopaths because we literally let kids get away with murder. A little corporal punishment goes a long way. This teacher was clearly overboard, but most of us become very emotional when we see disabled children attacked! I agree that if the parents should be more outraged about their son’s behavior and less anxious to make a buck off of someone else’s terrible position of trying to protect students without reasonable ways to discipline little sociopaths in the making.

I also think that many parents do work hard to discipline thier kids, but society undermines this by coddling vicious little criminals. I can only imagine that the kid would think it funny to call 911 on his own mother should she give him the good smack he clearly needed to begin with!

If the teacher is charged, the student should be charged for assauting the girl as well!

BTW- assault is the threat of violence, battery is actual violence. So technically, they should both be charged with assault and battery. Each can justify their actions, my guess is the teacher will come out looking much better than the little punk. Most of us would be temporarily insane if we had to watch a handicapped kid get bullied without any reasonable way to find recourse!

Shoot, I might become temporarily insane if an adult made racist/retarded comments about a kid in my presence!

Either way, just more evidence of the decline of Western Civilization…

  • Aaron

this is messed up, for one thing teachers have been beating their students for thousands of years and two, the kid probably needed his ass whipped
