The Doodle 4 Google competition has come to an end and 9 year old Mackenzie Melton of El Dorado Springs, Missouri is the winner. The Doodle 4 Google competition invited U.S. kids, grades K-12, to compete to have their artwork featured on the Google homepage as one of Google’s “doodles” of their logo. They asked kids to explore the theme “If I Could Do Anything, I would…” in their imaginative doodlings.
Google received more than 33,000 student submissions from all over the country. The art work of the 40 Regional Finalists and the National Winner will be exhibited for the public at the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum from May 27th to July 8th, 2010.
This is the second year of the Doodle 4 Google project. According to their FAQ page, Google has created the competition because:
“At Google we believe in thinking big and dreaming big, and we can’t think of anything more important than encouraging students to do the same.”
MacKenzie’s prize comes along with a $15,000 college scholarship to be used at the school of her choice, a trip to New York City for the announcing event, a laptop computer, a wacom digital design tablet, and a t-shirt printed with her doodle. Her school will also get a $25,000 grant towards the establishment/improvement of a computer lab. Her doodle will be on the Google.com homepage on May, 27, 2010.
Mackenzie’s answer to the “If I could do anything, I would…” prompt was:
“If I could do anything, I would…” make the world eco-friendly. I would ride my bike to school and make my electricity from wind. I would compost my garbage and recycle my empty bottles and cans. I would keep the earth as clean as when I first found it.”
She says she picked her theme because, “the rainforest is in danger and it is not fair to the plants and animals. [She] love everything except spiders and snakes, but [she] would still save them.
