Twilight Camp Out for Eclipse Premiere’s Red Carpet

By Bridget Tyler on June 24th, 2010

If your teens think they are the biggest Twilight fans, like, ever, they may have to reassess after they see the tent city growing in downtown Los Angeles as die hard fans lie in wait for a glimpse of the series’ stars at the Thursday premiere of Twilight Eclipse.

Some of these incredibly devoted fans have been camping out in the concrete plaza of an entertainment complex in Los Angeles since Sunday night, and they still have a day and a night to go.  About 550 of them will be rewarded with guaranteed spots on sidelines of the red carpet for the Eclipse premiere.

“It’s just worth seeing all the stars. They bring the characters that we love so much to life, so we want to see them in person and cheer them on,” Yolanda Rodriguez, 36, an unemployed graphic designer who came from San Francisco for the event told Reuters.

Almost all of the camped out fans are female.  Some critics, like Jen Yamato of Movies.com, are comparing the crazed anticipation to Beatlemania in the 1960s.

“It’s really akin to Beatlemania back in the day, in terms of how ardently Twilight fans really love the property, and camping out outside of the premiere is just one way to celebrate that love,” Yamato told Reuters.

Dawn Sirtak, who has camped out for previous Twilight movies, tells Reuters, “It’s a giant slumber party, what’s not to love? You get to visit with your friends from all over the country and even from other countries and you make new ones.”

A red carpet is also used in gala celebrity events such as the Academy Awards, Met Ball and Baftas.
