10-Year-Old iReporter for CNN, Marshall Reid, Succeeds in Healthy Eating Challenge

By Bridget Tyler on July 14th, 2010

Ten year old Marshall Reid and his old sister Jordan were inspired by the documentary “Super Size Me” to create their own diet challenge, and their own documentary, “Portion Size Me,” this summer.  Unlike Morgan Spirloff, who ate only MacDonald’s food for 31 days, Marshall challenged himself to eat a healthy diet for 31 days.

He and his sister video taped their healthy eating activities, carefully checking ingredients in store bought food and sharing their recipes for healthy versions of favorite foods like taco salad. Marshall particularly likes grilling things like sweet potatoes, turkey burgers and portobello mushrooms.

His efforts have caught the attention of CNN, and earned him a place on their website as an iReporter.  So far, his mission is a huge success – he’s lost more than 11 pounds in just a month.  His mom is just happy to see how much fun her kids are having with the project.  She plans to encourage them to keep it going by finding new goals, like making 10 days of healthy school lunches or 10 days of affordable, healthy dinners.

“We have to keep this going, because he’s excited and full of energy,” said Reid, of Sanford, North Carolina.  “He has always loved cooking.”
