A minor earthquake shook the Washington area early Friday morning.
The Huffington Post reports that “according to the US Geological Survey, it was the strongest quake to hit within 30 miles of DC since 1974.” The quake measured a magnitude of 3.6 on the Richter Scale, jolting many area residents awake around 5:00 am.
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.
Twitter and Facebook are abuzz with people talking about the quake. So far, three groups have been started on Facebook, including, and “I witnessed the earthquake in Maryland 7/16/2010,” “I survived the Maryland Earthquake of 2010,” the all inclusive, “I was alive for the 2010 baby earthquake in DC/Maryland,” which seemingly anyone could join.
President Barack Obama is reportedly one person who was unshaken by the quake. After a press conference regarding the Gulf Oil Spill, a reporter asked the President whether or not he felt this morning’s earthquake.
The Huffington Post writes that “a smiling Obama said he didn’t feel it.”
By midmorning, more than 11,000 people had felt the rattling –some as far away as Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
