Sports Memories in the Making: August 3-8

By Jeremy Suede on August 3rd, 2010

With just two months left in the baseball regular season, it is coming down to the wire for many teams to make their playoff push.  This is the time of year where the real teams step up and the lesser teams take their true places at the bottom of the standings.  The Yankees have been at the top of the league since the beginning pretty much and look to continue that trend all the way through the playoffs.  They are the team to beat and have the biggest target on their backs.  Rightly so, they are The Yankees and they are the best right now, If you don’t love them, you hate them.

The Atlanta Braves are the best team in the National League and with this being manager Bobby Cox’s final season at the helm, they have plenty of strong motivation to get through to the championship.  They recently caught a break when, hated rivals Philadelphia Phillies’ slugger, Ryan Howard injured his ankle and will be out for a while.  Now will be the time to game some ground and put the regular season behind them and get ready for the post season.

NASCAR season is also winding down and with only four Sprint Cup races left before their version of the playoffs, every race could mean life or death to the drivers and their teams.  Kevin Harvick currently sits on the top of the Sprint Cup standings but with top drivers like Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart also in the standings, anything could happen once The Chase starts and everyone starts over at zero again.  But watch out for racers like Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Ryan Martin and Kasey Kahne who are so close to breaking into the top and stealing a spot in the postseason.

But fear not!!!!

The NFL has begun training camp and teams are starting to practice seriously in preparation for the upcoming season.  It’s just a matter of weeks before professional athletes play the game for real and America’s newest past time comes to the forefront of the sporting world.

Top 3

1. MLB – Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees – August 5-9

The series between these teams are the highlight of the baseball season, especially this time of year when winning and losing effects are so tangible.  The games and the standings mean so much and with the Red Sox teetering on the brink of not making the postseason winning these games means a great deal.  Not just to fan morale by beating heated rivals but by also gaining ground on the current top team in their division.  Add to it the fact that Alex Rodriguez still has not hit his 600th homerun and doing it against the Red Sox would make it so much more memorable.  These games will be hard fought and rowdy with Yankees fans letting the Sox hear it every chance they get.  Watch just to see the crazy New Yorkers shows fans how to utilize home field advantage.

2. PGA – World Golf Championship – August 5-8

Defending champion Tiger Woods will look to defend his title and in the process win his first event of the season after all that…er, drama went down in recent months.  Perhaps he can bring some cheer to the city of Akron, OH after Lebron James recently left their town in favor of Miami.  Since Woods’ transgressions, it has allowed younger players to step up and win some titles and fuel the fire that Tiger Woods can no longer dominate.  Unfortunately for those new, young players, that is exactly the kind of motivation that Tiger needs to fuel his fire to comeback and show everyone he is still the best in the game.   So it’s a win-win situation for you the viewer; either you get to see Tiger Woods dominate once again or you get to see some young whipper snapper snatch away his trophy.  Good show!

3. NASCAR – NSCS at Watkins Glen – August 8 @ 1 pm

Although this race does not count towards The Chase for The Sprint Cup these drivers will be racing for pride and posture going into the final four races of the season.  I really don’t have any other reason of putting this on my top list besides that it was the only thing interesting going on that wasn’t baseball.  So if you got nothin to do this Sunday and the kids are bored, why not tune into the race and check out some of the cool gadgets and cameras that have been setup to make sure you get every angle and speed reading.  It really is the coolest sport to watch on TV because of everything they show you but after a few laps there is only so much you can watch.  I recommend trying to catch it for the last 50 or so laps and then you can get a good viewing of a NASCAR race.  Catch them before the season comes to an end.
