It’s every parents worst nightmare. A call from the hospital, telling you that your child has been in a car accident and didn’t make it. Now imagine finding out a week later that your teen isn’t dead at all – they’re actually in a hospital, in a coma, but alive.
Abby is still in critical condition, but she’s starting to heal. She has finally opened her eyes and is breathing on her own. ”Today was a good day,” the family shared Sunday on its blog, abbysfightforlife.com. “She still has a long way to go, but today was definitely an improvement. Please continue praying for Abby.”
Officials had confused Abby with her friend, 21 year old Marlena Cantu, who was returning from Disneyland with Abby and another friend when their SUV flipped over, killing two passengers and severely injuring another. It wasn’t until a week later when an autopsy confirmed that it was actually Cantu who had died that the two families were informed of the mistake.
The Guerra family told “Good Morning America” that it is impossible to describe the feeling of planning a funeral for a daughter, then finding out that she is alive. Abby is far from out of the woods – but her mother is confident that her daughter is a fighter, and that she’ll keep fighting her way back to them.
Meanwhile, Cantu’s family buried their daughter on Monday. The Guerra’s feel for the family – they, at least, got their daughter back. Abby’s father, Sergio, told “GMA” that, “I feel real, real bad for the other parents because … probably they are feeling the same way we felt before.”
