10.5 Ways to Entertain your Child for less than $5

By Tiffany on August 5th, 2010

When it comes to entertaining your kids – less is more. Here is a list of ten ways that you can have fun with your kids for less than $5!

1. Go to the Pet Store

Who doesn’t like to go the Pet Store! Check out all the different creepy crawlies, cute kittens and puppies and colorful birds. Your kids will have a blast!

2. Go to the Park & Have a Picnic

Work together to make a breakfast or lunch filled with all the essentials and head out the park. There you can play ball, play in the playground, and watch the sun go down! The Park is a great place to bond and have a blast locally.
3. Go for a Walk or Ride your Bikes
Everyone needs a little exercise – why do it apart from your kids? Grab the kids, the dog, the bike, the scooter and hit the road for a nice escape away from the television.

4. Local Store Kid Events

Local Stores have great options for kids. Whether it’s your local hardware store, craft store, toy store or book store – there are always wonderfully cheap (and sometimes free) classes that will give your kids some hands on fun and something to talk about for weeks to come!

5. Create a Fort

Remember how fun it was to make your own fort in your living room? Why not share that experience with your kids? Grab the pillow cushions, pillows, blankets and furniture and start building!

6. Tell a Story

Whatever happened to the art of the storyteller? There’s something magical about watching your kids watch you flying by the seat of your pants to create the most whirlwind story ever. Let them choose your own adventure, take it outside and imagine a whole new world, explore life through make believe!

7. Bake Something

Bake a cake, gingerbread house, or cookies! Let your kids mix the batter, add the ingredients and decorate their finished product! Baking is great and let’s not forget the added extra of having something yummy to eat when you’re done!

8. Lemonade Stand

At some point everyone has experienced life in the fast lane with you very own lemonade stand. Make it a week long activity – testing the lemonade, making the posters, and setting up the stand. It’s fun, a great lesson in math, and instead of spending $5 maybe you’ll make some!

9. Insect/Treasure/EasterEgg Hunt

Setting up a hunt in your backyard is fun, easy and will have your kids busy for hours. Simply hide some treasure around the yard and give your kid a handful of clues to help them along the way!

10. Play Dressup

Everyone loves a little imagination! Remember those bridesmaids dresses you swore you’d wear again, and that Halloween costume from 1990? Take them out and let your kids play in a world of make believe with their new attire!

10.5 Be there!

All in all, you don’t need to spend a ton to have fun with your kids. All they want to do is spend time with you, and it could be as easy as telling them a story, going out for a 5 minute walk, or teaching them how to garden. Good Luck & Have Fun!

YOUR TURN?!

Is there something we missed? What’s your favorite activity you do with your kids for $5 or less?
