Meteor Shower August 2010 Photos Hit Internet!

By AAyles on August 13th, 2010

The 2010 meteor shower peaked last night, lighting up the skies and putting on a show for anxious viewers. While the clouds hid the spectacular event from being visible in some areas, there are many photos and videos hitting the Internet this morning that show clear shots of the falling stars.

The Perseid meteor shower happens once a year, every August, and is one of the most anticipated events for astronomers and astronomy-lovers. Last year over 200 meteorites fell in an hour, although the moon blocked many from being visible. This year, the full moon appears on Monday, meaning there was a clear shot for many viewers.

This morning, we’re putting together an article featuring as many photos and videos of last night’s event as possible. We’re searching Twitter and YouTube to find the best shots of the spectacular show. So far, here’s what we’ve found but we encourage you to send along your pics or videos (or leave a link in the comment section below) so everyone can share in the excitement.

Here are the highlights from the meteor shower:

Well here in the Great North West, just outside of Seattle, Fall City Campgrounds was a fantastic view of the sky. We were at the camp site by 11:30pm-1:30am, and we still saw more than 20 huge meteors. I have seen them year after year, and this year was great. When you did see the Meteors’ they were longer and brighter. The night was royal blue and you could see one of our planets real closes, however they moon was no were in sight adding to the meteor show. The stars looked like a crystal chandelier. It looked like God was skipping stars across the sky. Just simply one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Good Times 2010

[...] Meteor showers are the result of the Earth passing through a stream of space rocks, which light up the atmosphere with “shooting stars.”  Comets are the source of most of these fields, but the Geminids are different.  Their source is a mysterious rocky object called 3200 Paethon, which doesn’t shed nearly enough debries to explain the size of the Geminid meteor showers.
