Is Formula Feeding Better for your Child?

By Tiffany on August 18th, 2010

When researching the difference between formula feeding and breast feeding I was a little taken back. For every 20 pages dedicated to breast feeding, there was 1 paragraph of the benefits of formula feeding. While I don’t have an opinion either way – I believe there should be a choice. And for those who can’t breastfeed for whatever reason – you want to know that you’re not traumatizing your child by doing the wrong thing.

As a formula feed kid (My mother was unable to breastfeed) I’ve never seen the big deal, to be honest. Sure there are many benefits to breast feeding – but am I an obese sickly adult with a low IQ? Nope. Do I feel like I was denied the privilege of having this close bond with my mother? Umm.. not in the least. In fact, my parents worked together to provide food for me – in a way I was lucky.

So while there are lots of pro breastfeeding write-ups out there – let’s give you the benefits of both:

Breast Feeding

  • Fights Infections: the antibodies of the mother can be passed along to the child. This means less chance for your baby to be sick.
  • Easier to Digest: Contains lactose, protein and fat – along with minerals and vitamins baby needs to grow.
  • Budget-Friendly: Unless you’re a big fan of accessorizing yourself – Breastfeeding is free.

Bottle Feeding

  • Convenient & Flexible: Anyone can feed your baby meaning that your significant other can enjoy the moment as well. Also, convenience is key – it’s easier to keep a schedule when you’re creating formula bottles ahead of time.
  • Less Frequent Feedings: Formula food takes longer to ingest which means less feedings during the day.
  • Measurable: A bottle is much easier to track than a breast – good thing to remember if you’re paranoid that your baby isn’t getting feed enough.
  • No Diet Restrictions: After a hard day – you can drink that much needed glass of wine.

Whether you breast feed or bottle feed your child is ultimately your decision. Don’t let others decide for you – read, research and balance out the facts with your lifestyle.

YOUR THOUGHTS?

Do you bottle feed your child? Do you breastfeed? Was it a tough decision to make?

Is Breastfeeding Creepy?

  • Luschka @ Diary of a First Child

Actually, you can still have that glass of wine when you’re breastfeeding, you just can’t get drunk – which you shouldn’t anyway, when you’re caring for a baby!

Although you have listed more of the benefits of bottle feeding than breast feeding, it’s worth mentioning that the risks of formula feeding are way way way way way more than the risks of breastfeeding. (I’ve been doing a lot of research around formula recently for someone who wanted to know what ‘the best’ formula is, and it’s quite disturbing)

Although I agree that more education and support is required for women who choose to bottle feed, there really is no contest between breast and formula for baby or mother’s health.

Yes, Luschka. Tiffany, you’re the same person who wrote the Is Breastfeeding Creepy Article. If you don’t want to breastfeed your child, don’t, but lets not go around pushing formula feeding as if it were equal to breastfeeding. It’s not, and the formula companies who did this in Africa and other parts of the world were responsible for lots of malnourished babies because the mothers couldn’t really afford the formula and so watered it down. They had the best nourishment for their children for free, but were talked out of it. We need to promote breastfeeding.

Lets have a party for Luschka and Pwll for being the best moms and breast feeding and shame on those who choose the bottle. Please…Blow your “I am better than other moms” attitude out your backside. No one is harming their child by feeding them formula, at least in the US. I’ve done both and both kids are equally healthy and smart.People need to keep their noses out of what others do.
