Ever heard a kid try to mimick a joke you told them? They’ll probably race through the beginning, skip the middle, and then tell you the punch line before you even know what he’s talking about – but whats the best part? The part where he cracks his head back and laughs like it’s the funniest thing that’s ever been in said in all of the world – now that’s funny!
Having a kid who tells jokes like a bad stand up comedian isn’t what being funny is all about – it’s about focusing on certain qualities that make a kid less serious, more imaginative, happier and all around fun to be around.
Here are the five ways to a funnier happier kid:
1. A Relaxed & Laid Back Kid is a Happy Kid
The key to a funny kid is one that isn’t stressed out. Sit back and watch Disney movies – and talk about it afterwards. What made it funny – why did they think something was funny. Don’t turn an old Looney Tunes cartoon into a serious discussion about domestic violence – take it for what it is – funny stuff!
2. Loosen Up!
Don’t be the embarrassing parent or anything – but loosen up around your kid. Let them know it’s okay to joke around and that there are times when you don’t have to be so serious. By emulating you, they’ll learn how to be calm, happy and see the brighter side of things!
3. Share interesting and Silly ideas
You can’t teach someone to be funny – but you can teach them to see the world a little bit sillier. If you see something that strikes your funnybone – share it! He/She might not quite understand now, but they’ll learn how to see the world with a happier sillier lens. Once your kid can see the world like this for themselves… watch out! You might have the next Colbert or Cosby on your hands.
4. Smile all the time
The funniest people I know are the ones who smile and laugh all the time. They just seem happier than the rest of us. So be a role model, and do your best to smile often, don’t let your kid get used to your grumpy side – would you really want them to be the Grump of their class?
5. Optimism
Positivity is the key to funny – If you’re able to teach your child how to look on the bright side before you know it they’ll be finding the funny in it too!
Being Funny isn’t about turning your kid into a one-joke party favor – it’s about teaching him/her how to laugh at themselves, laugh at the world and not take anything too seriously. Create the right environment and you’ll be surprised – you’re kid will even crack you up!
