It is finally here!!!!
The NFL season is finally here and the new American past time will be playing meaningful games by the end of the week. College football may have already started but my football season starts when the NFL does. For the next few months millions of Americans will plop down on their couches for many many hours on Saturdays and Sundays just to enjoy watching this game being played. Rivalries will be renewed and team affiliations will become a major point of contention among friends. It is a multi billion dollar industry that keeps getting better every year and is quick to make changes to improve the game. Easily surpassing all the other sports for popularity and will stay in our national consciousness even when games aren’t being played. Parts of this country literally come to a halt when their team is playing and the mood of entire populations changes based on these games. Don’t even get me started on the insanity that is fantasy football.
This season will be very interesting and all the story lines will make sure that you will always have a reason to watch. Will the New Orleans Saints be able to repeat as Super Bowl winners? Will Brett Favre finally be able to not throw a season ending interception? Will the high powered New York Jets be able to live up to their hype? Will Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys be able to fulfill their goal of making it the the Super Bowl being played on their home field? All these questions and more will be answered in the next few weeks so pull up a cushion and enjoy this highly entertaining game with the whole family.
As the NFL starts, baseball will quickly come to an end and the World Series will be here before you know it. Regular season baseball games just can’t compete with the NFL games. The teams who will make the playoffs are pretty much set and only the Wild Card spots are still up for grabs. One division that is not decided is the National League West. The Padres have lead most of the season but have recently gone on a 10-game losing streak and now anybody in that division is a contender. Just something to keep an eye as baseball fades away.
Top 3
1. NFL – Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints – Sept. 9 @ 8:30 pm
The NFL kicks off their season with a HUGE game. This rematch of last years NFC Championship game that was decided in the final minutes of the game on a Brett Favre interception and let the Saints advance and eventually win the Super Bowl. The Vikings were left with a very sour taste in their mouths and will be looking to inflict that on the Saints by starting their season off with loss. Winning this game will give each team a big boost of pride, morale and momentum into the long, grueling season. The Saints have many returning and healthy players but will they be victims of their own success and not play with the same intensity now that they have proven themselves? The Vikings did get Brett Favre to return but their receivers are not healthy and will be out of play for a few weeks. This does not bode well for Brett who’s big gun arm needs receivers who can catch the ball and make plays. This will be a great way to get pumped up for the upcoming NFL season and welcome the wonderful game of football back into our lives.
2. College Football – No. 3 Boise State Broncos at No. 10 Virginia Tech Hokies - Sept. 6 @ 8 pm
The college football schedule starts off with a big bang as these two top 10 teams face off against each with long lasting implications for the winner and loser. Boise State has had one of the best football programs in the country over the past few years but because their school is in a minor conference they get no respect and are overlooked when it comes time to decide who’ll play for the national championship. This is their best year to make a statement by going undefeated in a tough schedule and forcing people to see they are one of the best. Basically that makes every game a playoff game for the Broncos because if they lose then they have given everyone an excuse to write them off yet again. They have a high powered offense that use tricky plays to try and score on every snap. They have everything to lose in this game and the Hokies know this and would be more than happy to prove that they are the best an upset a higher ranked team. This will be one of the best games of the entire year and no matter what the score is watch until the end because you never know what could happen.
3. MLB – Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox – Sept. 6 – 8
The Red Sox are circling the drain and unless they drastically turn things around their season is going to end without a trip to the post season. They are about eight games behind the Rays for the American League Wild Card spot (this spot is given to the team who has the best record in their league but did not win their division) and a couple big wins against the Rays will get them closer to making a run for the post season. They Rays are solid and have been all season and do not show sign of letting up so the Red Sox will have their work cut out for them to get some badly needed wins. Anything can happen during these games and you never know what play could spark a team to rally and surge into the playoffs. Watch to see if the Red Sox have what it takes to prove they deserve a spot in the post season.
