The infamous Heene family, who caught national attention almost a year ago with a hoax that had everyone from the local police to mountain search and rescue teams to the National Guard scrambling to help their six year old son who was supposedly air born in a home made weather balloon. The balloon disrupted air traffic, put rescuer’s lives at risk and kept the nation at the edge of its seat all day before it began to lose altitude and people around the country feared that the small boy had died a terrifying death in the plummet.
The six year old was, of course, not in the balloon. He was found hiding in the attic, and after a variety of stories about how the family ended up thinking he was in the balloon, it was revealed that the whole thing had been a hoax, designed to create publicity for a reality show the family was trying to pitch.
Now the family is leaving Colorado to start a new life in Florida, and one can hardly blame them for wanting to start from scratch. Both Richard Heene and Mayumi Heene spent time in jail over the incident and they are still paying off restitution for the money their hoax cost various emergency services and the FAA.
