Ne-Yo Turns to Mom for Child Rearing Advice

Ne-YoMoms know best!

R&B singer Ne-Yo will soon have one woman demanding all his attention – he’s expecting a new baby girl with on-again off-again girlfriend, Monyetta Shaw, in January.

“I’m 30 and I do have my very first child on the way and I’m very, very excited about that,” Ne-Yo told PEOPLE magazine.  “It’s a New Year’s baby and I’m just in a really good place right now.”

So just how is the star preparing for the birth of his daughter?

“I’m definitely reading books and paying attention to my mom a lot.  My mom is the caretaker, so any question I have, I’m sure she’ll be able to answer.”

Though he’s currently promoting his new album, Libra Scales, which is due in stores this month, once his daughter is born, Ne-Yo has vowed to take a self-imposed paternity leave.

“I’m going to take a little bit of time off, maybe a month or so.  For me to be there and then leave the next day?  I can’t do it like that… I’d love to take more time but I gotta make sure that college tuition gets paid so I gotta be back on that road,” he laughed.

What exactly is his Mom’s best advice?

“Know how to toe the line between being a friend and parent.  You don’t want to be too much of a friend but you don’t want to be so much of a parent that your child doesn’t have a friend in you.”
