Losing a child is a terrible thing. Having a child disappear without a trace may be even worse. Kyron Horman’s parents have been searching for their son for three months, ever since his step-mother watched him walk down a hallway and, she thought, into class. Three months later, school has started again without Kyron, and, yesterday, the missing boy turned eight.
The Horman family decided to face down the heartbreaking milestone with celebration, rather than sadness.
“Regardless of where he is, I’m going to celebrate the fact that we brought him into this world,” Kyron’s father, Kaine Horman, told The Oregonian. “It will be hard [with] him not being there, but we’re going to do something that he loves to do.”
Yesterday, on Kyron’s actual birthday, family and friends gathered at West Main Church in Medford, Oregon. Then, on Sunday, a second party will be thrown at the Family Fun Center & Bullwinkle’s Restaurant in Watsonville. Lazer tag, miniature golf and bumper boats will entertain Kyron’s friends as they celebrate a little boy who can’t be there to celebrate himself.
Representatives of the local sheriff’s department will also be on hand providing DNA kits and digital fingerprinting for children.
“I want [Kyron] to know that he’s loved,” Kyron’s mom, Desiree Young, told The Oregonian. “I want him to feel that we care. And that we’re going to find him. I’m hoping we have a good turnout to show Kyron that everyone’s caring for him.”
