Katy Perry has appeared on hit shows like Saturday Night Live and David Letterman and has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious events but one place the California girl isn’t welcome is Sesame Street.
Katy taped a segment for the show but her hard work will never air on the hit series because parents are up in arms over the supposed provocative nature of the clip, which is already appearing online.
The video (seen below) features Katy and Elmo interacting with one another while Katy sings these lyrics to the beat of her “Hot ‘N Cold” hit single: “How am I supposed to play with you? / You’re up and you’re down / You’re running around / You’re fast and you’re slow / You’re stop and you’re go.”
The clip seems innocent enough but some parents are furious over Katy’s low-cut, cleavage-bearing dress and sexy lyrics.
A statement from Sesame Workshop revealed the following:
“Sesame Street has a long history of working with celebrities across all genres, including athletes, actors, musicians and artists. Sesame Street has always been written on two levels, for the child and adult. We use parodies and celebrity segments to interest adults in the show because we know that a child learns best when co-viewing with a parent or care-giver. We also value our viewer’s opinions and particularly those of parents. In light of the feedback we’ve received on the Katy Perry music video which was released on You Tube only, we have decided we will not air the segment on the television broadcast of Sesame Street, which is aimed at preschoolers. Katy Perry fans will still be able to view the video on You Tube.”
Do you think the clip is inappropriate for Sesame Street?
