Jimmie Johnson, New York Yankees, Mike Vick and Sports Memories in the Making: Oct. 4 – 10

By Jeremy Suede on October 4th, 2010

New York YankeesThe baseball regular season is over and now it’s time for the playoffs.  There was a little drama at the end of the season but now the real drama begins when teams that lose don’t get to play again until next year.  The New York Yankees are looking to repeat as World Series champions and everyone else is looking to dethrone them.  The Philadelphia Phillies are trying to reach the World Series for the third straight year and regain the title they gave up last year to the Yankees.  Those are the two favorite teams to make the Series but you never know which teams will come out on top when everything could be lost.

NASCAR’s version of playoffs, the Sprint Cup Chase, are well under way and if they were to end right now Jimmie Johnson would take the Cup for the 5th straight time.  That is unprecedented in NASCAR and could make Jimmie Johnson one of the greatest athletes ever.  Five straight titles in any sport would categorize the recipient as one of the greatest ever and you should make sure to see if he can do it.  There are 11 other drivers in The Chase but my money would be on Jimmie.  He’s just that good.

The NFL season rolls on and continues to entertain week in and week out.  It’s easy to see why it’s the most popular sport in America and if you don’t have a favorite team I would recommend just picking one and getting behind it.  Find and individual player you like and just root for them to win.  Find a simple reason to like it and I promise you will be rewarded with great athletic feats and many reason to keep interested.

The college football world is pretty much going as expected with no major upsets last week.  But Texas, Penn State and USC have all fallen out of the Top 25 Rankings leaving room for three other teams to be in BCS contention.

Check out these events because all of the big games are worth a watch and promise long lasting memories.

Jimmie JohnsonTop Games To Watch

1. NASCAR – Pepsi Max 400 – Oct. 10 @ 3 pm

With his second place finish last week, Jimmy Johnson moved into the top spot of the Sprint Cup Chase and looks poised to make a strong run for his 5th consecutive championship.  He doesn’t hold a commanding lead at all but he is one of the most competitive drivers there is and he is going to do everything he can to stay at the top.  But as with any race, there are plenty of other drivers looking to strip him of his title and take it for themselves.  Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch and Jeff Gordon still have plenty of chances to take the lead with 7 more races before all is said and done.  There were some fireworks last week when drivers Kyle Busch and David Reutimann started shoving each other in their cars out on the track.  This is how heated it gets during this time, everything is on the line and these drivers are giving it their all.  Only one can be the champion but all 12 of them are going to give it their all.  Watch and see who is driving to win and who is just driving.

2. MLB Playoffs – New York Yankees vs. Minnesota Twins – Oct. 6, 7, 9 & TBD

NY YankeesLast year while on their way to a World Series Championship, the Yankees swept the Twins in the first round of the playoffs.  The Twins’ season ended very bitterly and they had to play with that on their heads all year.  Now is their chance to get revenge and knock out the champs in the first round.  The Yankees have a little chip on their shoulder because during the very last game of the year, the Boston Red Sox kept the them from winning the American League East title.  While they still made the playoffs as the Wild Card, they would have liked to take their division crown so now they have a little more motivation to make it through and beat the Tampa Bay Rays (who took the division).    have superstars in the lineup but it will come down to starting pitching and there the Yankees hold a significant advantage.  See which team comes with more intensity and focus to efficiently beat the other and make it one step closer to the World Series.  Will it be revenge or will it be the first stop on the Yankee’s road to repeat?

3. NFL – Kansas City Chiefs at Indianapolis Colts – Oct. 10 @ 1 pm

The biggest shock so far in the NFL season is the fact that the Kansas City Chiefs are undefeated.  They came from no where to show poise and ability to win games when they need to be won.  Momentum is huge in the NFL and right now the Chiefs are running on high.  On the other hand is Peyton Manning who’s Colts team is just 2-2 and not winning the close games they used to.  They lost last week to the Jacksonville Jaguars who are currently competing to be one of the worst teams in the league.  They are down in the dumps and a win this week against an undefeated team would go a long way with their pride and could spark a resurgence in the entire team.  Peyton is going to come out with a high level of intensity just looking to score points and get a convincing win.  Expect big things from Peyton this week because he will be expecting nothing less.

Michael VickThings To Keep An Eye On

  • By getting injured Michael Vick has made the quarterback situation in Philadelphia even worse.  Kevin Kolb came in and did not look good at all.  At the beginning of the season the Eagles backed Kolb as their starter but then had to change their minds when Vick did so well.  Now what will they do?
  • Besides No. 12 LSU at No. 14 Florida, there are really exciting college football games.  Check out the schedule here to see what else you may want to see.
