Trevor Gretzky, 18, may be the son of man thought by many to be the greatest professional hockey player in history but his sport of choice seems to be baseball. At least, that’s the sport he’s chosen to focus his college career on. Though Gretzky was expected by many to become a part of one of several Division One football teams around the country that were recruiting the high school senior, he’ll be heading to San Diego State next year.
“The campus is beautiful and the program stood out to me,” Gretzky told the San Diego Union-Tribune. “All the coaches were great. Both of us have the same goals, to make it to the College World Series.”
Gretzky’s change of heart, and change of sport, may have been caused by a string of losses and near losses for his high school football team, for which he plays quarterback. However, given the teens already extraordinary baseball stats, it seems that his future in baseball may very well be as bright as it might have been in football.
Wayne Gretzky, Trevor’s father, is a retired NHL hockey player whose nickname “The Great One” is well earned. Upon his retirement on April 18, 1999, he held forty regular-season records, fifteen playoff records, and six All-Star records. He is the only NHL player to total over 200 points in one season—a feat he accomplished four times.
