Move over MacGyver, a father-son team from Brooklyn got their own video footage of outer space using just a weather balloon, a video camera, and an iPhone.
Seven year old Max Geissbuhler and his father manager to send their homemade spacecraft nearly 19 miles high, bringing back what is perhaps the most impressive amateur space footage ever.
Check out their video below:
Max and his Dad spent about 8 months perfecting their spacecraft in hopes of filming, “the blackness beyond out earth,” Yahoo writes.
The pair used a specially designed insulated casing to protect their camera, iPhone, and GPS equipment, along with a note from Max requesting the spacecraft’s safe return from whoever may find it once it returned to solid ground.
In August, they finally deemed their spacecraft ready for travel, launching it at a nearby park and watching as it disappeared into the sky. A little over an hour later, they found it stuck in a tree, 25 miles from where they let it go.
Though their craft didn’t technically make it to the boundaries of space, Max and his Dad are of course extremely proud of their accomplishment.
