As any parent of a teenager can tell you, they seem to have their phone permanently attached to their hands. Now we have proof.
A new study from Nielsen shows that the average teenager is now sending 3,339 texts per month. Young adults (ages 18-24) send less than half that number, exchanging 1630 texts per month.
All this texting means kids have less time for talking. Voice usage has dropped, as teens seem to find texting more fun and more convenient. 22% say SMS is easier than a phone call and another 20% say it’s faster. Voice is decreasing in all age groups under 55 as the lure of texting increases.
While we adults may roll their eyes at these stats, think about how Instant Message has changed the way many of us communicate at work. Instead of getting up and going to talk to someone, we just send a quick IM to ask a question, confirm a point, etc.
Maybe the kids have something here.
