A 10 year old girl gave birth in Spain Tuesday, becoming one of the world’s youngest mothers.
The girl, Elena, reportedly traveled from her home country of Romania to Spain with her mother, for a family wedding and to give birth. Both Elena, and her newborn baby, a daughter named Nicoletta, are reportedly in good health.
Nicoletta’s father is said to be a 13-year old boy who was Elena’s boyfriend. While at the hospital the 10-year old’s mother is said to have informed staff that her daughter had lived with her boyfriend in their home country. However, the two are no longer together.
The Daily Mail reports that the young family is expected to make Spain their permanent home, living among dozens of other Romanian and South American immigrants in a three-story building in the center of Lebrija – a walled town between Jerez and Seville in Spain.
Elena’s mother also told the paper she was feeling “ecstatic” about the birth of her granddaughter. “Elena is very happy with her child. We’re very happy, for us it’s not a drama. These things are normal in our country. Girls get married at 10 so we don’t understand why people are so surprised.”
In accordance with local tradition, both mother and child are expected to stay in doors for 40 days, so there are currently no photographs of Elena or baby Nicoletta.
Social services is said to be still deciding whether to let Nicoletta stay with her young mom, but have indicated that they will not separate mother and child if they feel that both minors are happy.
