Cal-Maine Foods Inc, the nation’s largest egg seller and distributor, is recalling more than 280,000 eggs the company purchased from Ohio Fresh Eggs after a test showed salmonella at the Ohio farm. So far no illnesses have been reported.
According to Cal Maine Foods, the contaminated eggs were distributed to both retailers an wholesalers in Arkansas, California, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas.
Ohio Fresh Eggs said the farm held back eggs from the barn where the salmonella was found, however, through discussions with the FDA they discovered that some eggs from that barn had been sent to a distributor in error, company officials revealed in a statement.
“Ohio Fresh Eggs sincerely regrets the error made on our farm, and we apologize to our customers and to consumers who may have purchased the eggs,” the officials said [via Huffington Post]. “We are redoubling our efforts to ensure thorough and ongoing training of our workers so this situation is not repeated.”
Earlier this year, salmonella was found on two egg farms in Iowa, resulting in a recall of 550 million eggs in August, which were linked to as many as 1,600 illnesses.
