Happy Veterans Day Quotes

By Heather B on November 11th, 2010

Happy Veterans Day Today, November 11, is Veterans’ Day – a federal holiday honoring military veterans.  The holiday is also known as ‘Remembrance Day’ or ‘Armistice Day’ in other areas of the world.

It is important for all of us to remember and understand the sacrifices that brave soldiers have made and continued to make for our country.

U.S. President Woodrow Wilson first proclaimed an Armistice Day for November 11, 1919, to commemorate the end of World War 1.

“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with lots of pride in heroism for those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations,” he said.

Below, is a compilation of other Veterans’ Day quotes [via Fame Crawler]:

“I think there is one higher office than president and I would call that patriot.” – Gary Hart

“In war, there are no unwounded soldiers.” – Jose Narosky

“This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is the home of the brave.” – Elmer Davis

“I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it, and while our soldiers can stand and fight, I can stand and feed and nurse them.” – Clara Barton

“War may sometimes be a necessary evil.  But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good.  We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other’s children.” – Jimmy Carter

“We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” – Cynthia Ozick

“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” – John Fitzgerald Kennedy
