There’s a new comic book hero in town – and this one hopes to be a positive role model for young girls!
Meet Spider Girl – or 16-year old high school student Anya Corazon, as she’s known when she’s not wearing her black and white spidey suit. Anya is trained in martial arts and has excellent fighting skills, BBC reports, while Marvel Comics says “she provides a positive, modern image of an empowered young woman.”
Marvel hopes their new Spider Girl comic will appeal to their growing young female fan base, who previously had few strong women characters to look up to.
“People want to read stories with characters they relate to,” said Spider Girl editor Tom Brennan. “We certainly hope that young women will pick this up and enjoy it.”
Spider Girl is said to be a trained fighter with a strong sense of justice – though she has no actual super powers. She’s also not related to Spider Man nor are they boyfriend and girlfriend.
Though previous attempts to launch a Spider Girl franchise have only resulted in modest sales, the current revamped version has a Twitter stream and can interact with her fellow superheroes and fans – something that’s always been popular among comic book readers.
