Forget turkey and stuffing. Thanksgiving 2010 is about turkey and stuff as stores offer consumers the chance to get a jump on Black Friday with Thanksgiving Day deals.
A growing number of large retail chains – including Wal-Mart, K-mart, Toys R Us and Sears – will be open for business Thursday.
“Thanksgiving is not as sanctified a day as it was even a few years ago,” Thomas Hine, author of ‘I Want That! How We All Became Shoppers’ tells USA Today. “This is an experiment by retailers to see how we will behave.”
It’s also an attempt to try and get consumers to spend more money this holiday season, after retailers failed to see an increase in sales last year. And the stores are going all out – Sears is reportedly offering $42 Covington sweaters for just $8.99 while Wal-Mart is giving away a $100 gift card with the purchase of a Blackberry, HTC, LG, Motorola or Samsung smartphone.
