Spiderman Swings into Action on Broadway

By Heather B on November 29th, 2010

Spiderman on BroadwayAfter many delays, Spider-Man swung into action on Broadway, giving its first public preview Sunday night to an excited audience of fans.  The rock musical, created by U2’s Bono and the Edge, had previously experienced year-long delays, on-set injuries, and a budget of approximately $65 million.  It’s often referred to as “Broadways’ biggest gamble.”

But, after paying as much as $275 per ticket for their first look at ‘Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark,’ fans seemed to think the musical is a “surefire hit,” despite some kinks.

Four unplanned stops called some audience members to walk out before the end of the show, however, school teacher Gilda Schultz who caught the musical with her three daughters told the New York Daily News, “It was very exciting, especially for the kids.  But I was just as excited.”

Andrew Shaffer and his wife, Gwendolyn Lee came to the Foxwoods theater dressed in Spider-Man costumes, despite expecting a less-than-stellar show.  Yet, Andrew later revealed that he was pleasantly surprised by ‘Turn off the Dark.’  “It was really good,” he said.

On 60-Minutes Sunday night, Bono reveal that creating the musical with his U2 bandmate had been a rewarding journey.  “It has been one of the funnest, more joyful rides of our artistic life, for sure.”
