MTVs Teen Mom Inspiring Teens to get Pregnant?

By Heather B on December 7th, 2010

Teen MomIs the success of MTV’s reality show glamorizing teen pregnancy and inspiring young girls to get pregnant?

As ‘Teen Mom’ searches for an all new teenaged cast of regulars to film, industry insiders reveal that some ladies are so eager to appear on TV they’re getting pregnant just to score an audition.

“This is yet another example of the desperation of fame,” relationship expert Matt Titus tells Pop Eater’s Rob Shuter.  “The sad state of reality television has created a lowbrow vehicle for untainted train wreck personalities to display their private lives.  Getting pregnant to be famous is like eating as many cockroaches as possible in a one minute period.”

(Didn’t they do that once on ‘Survivor?’)

Of course getting pregnant for a TV show is a horrifying thought – something Rabbi Shmuely Boteach, says is due to our culture’s out-of-control celebrity obsession.

“Reality TV first began by exploiting people’s problems, assuming they would do anything for fame.  The idea of teenage girls getting pregnant to be on television shows that reality TV is going a step beyond exploiting problems.  It is now creating the problems.”

“These girls are ignoring the fact that this decision is followed by a lifetime of responsibility,” the Rabbi continued.

Having a child as a teen is so selfish. You can’t provide the life that a child deserves. I made this mistake of being selfish and had kids at a young age because I thought I was ready and knew it all!!! My kids are now about to be 16 and 18 and they have struggled through life with me which was not fair to them at all. These girls need a reality check or a parent to put their foot up the kids ass!!!

This is exactly what it is. 16 and pregnant is just another reality show that is not right in more than one case. Yes they show the struggle but it is rediculous. They are showing young girls that it is ok and society has excepted it, no that is the wrong message. Second they act as if they cannot do anything else to add to the drama and struggle of being a single mother by, not showing any success stories. 1ho would ever thought that girls having babies in their teens would become famous over it. It is pure ignorance. My twin sister was a star basketball player, a 4.0 student and planning to go away to college and got pregnant at 16…she aint get no show or any extra treatment because it was a mistake accidents happen, but at the end of the day she is the best example of a teen mom I know. 4he is in college, raising her son that lives in an apartment on campus with her, has custody of him, feeds him, takes him to school in the morning before dhe has to go to class and has been up studying the night before. Yes she receives a lot of help from family and the college program she is in but she refused to become another statistic. You can live your life and do whatever you want to do even with a baby, but this show is not showing that at all.

I too can not talk about if the show is inspiring teens to get pregnant. I had parents that put their foot in my butt so far, and i still got pregnant and 17. I didn’t know what I was doing. so when my son was 3 months old I gave him up for adoption so that he could have the life I could not provide for him. I am 27 now and am married with a 3yr old and a 9 month old. I do however feel, that the more pressure a parent puts on their child to not have sex and get pregnant at a young age, the more likely they will have sex and become a teen parent. to the parents that don’t talk to their children about sex and pregnancy, I recommend that you do, but don’t push the topic every single day.
