Panama City Shooting at School Board Meeting

By Heather B on December 15th, 2010

Panama City School Board ShootingAt a board meeting for the Bay District Schools in Florida Tuesday afternoon, Clay Duke calmly approached the front of the room.  Then, spray painting a red “V” with a circle around it on the wall of the meeting room, he pulled out a small caliber handgun and ordered the room cleared.

“Six men stay.  Everyone else leave,” he said, adding that someone was going to die.

On a live internet feed of the meeting, Clay rambled about the apparent firing of his wife, and sales taxes, CNN reports.

School board members and Superintendent Bill Husflet tried to reason with Clay, who had a criminal record.

“You knew he had something in mind he was going to do and it would not end well,” Bill said after the event, which came to a hilt when Clay opened fire on the school officials at close range.  Thankfully, neither the board members nor the superintendent were injured in the attack.

Mike Jones, chief of security for the school system and a retired police officer exchanged fire with Clay, who rolled to the ground wounded before turning the gun on himself.  Mike was declared a hero, while the gunman was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Florida police have said they have a solid lead on Clay’s motive, but at the time of writing are not yet prepared to release it.
