Amber Portwood, the troubled young woman at the center of MTV’s hit show, Teen Mom, is back in the news. This time she’s not dropping jaws with bad behavior or arrest warrants. This time it’s her salary that has tongues wagging all over the internet.
The “television personality” was required to list her income during a recent appearance before a judge after being released on a $5,000 bond for the assault charges she faces because of an incident with Gary Shirley, the father of her child, caught by the MTV cameras. According to The Harald Bulletin, the twenty year old makes $140,000 for each six month contract with MTV, if she works a whole year she makes $280,000. Portwood’s lawyer objected to her salary being brought up in court, but was overruled.
Portwood was jailed for 24-hours after being charged with two felony domestic battery counts, a felony count of neglect of a dependent and one misdemeanor of domestic violence and battery. It was reported earlier this year that the stars of Teen Mom make around $60,000-65,000 for an 11-episode season. While other reality stars have been reported to make much more, the stars of The Jersey Shore rake in $30,000 per episode, many media outlets have questioned whether this kind of money is too much to pay for a reality soap that already rides the fine line between showing the hard truths behind teen pregnancy and glamorizing the situation.
