The Twilight Saga: Eclipse dominated at least one award show this season, but not the award show the Twilight fan in your house wanted. The Razzies are a yearly spoof on the Academy Awards that hands out awards for awfulness, rather than film making brilliance. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and The Last Airbender tied for most nominations this year with nine each, including worst picture. Also nominated in the worst picture category are Jennifer Aniston’s comedy, The Bounty Hunter and Sex and the City 2. Also, somewhat ironically, the Twlight inspired parody movie, Vampire’s Suck.
Kristen Stewart pulled down a worst-actress nomination, but she’s not alone. Her male co-stars were also graced with worst actor noms.
Razzies founder John Wilson defended the choice to nominate both the Twilight movie and it’s parody film by stating that the original film is actually funnier than the parody, though unintentionally. ”I know people who are into `Twilight’ who take it totally seriously and they’re very vociferous,” Wilson said. “Those of us who are not `Twi-hards’, we don’t get it. I don’t actually know any teenage girls who have had to make the choice between a werewolf and a vampire.”
The Last Airbender, another adaptation of a popular young adult series, certainly deserves The Razzie even more than Eclipse. Where Eclipse is melodramatic and silly, it pleased fans of the original novels and is at least entertaining, even if sometimes that’s because it’s unintentionally funny to those of us who are not die hard fans. Airbender broke the collective hearts of it’s loyal followers, and can not claim to be either funny or entertaining. M. Night Shyamalan is certainly a strong contender for the worst director and worst screenplay awards.
The Razzies lineup was announced a day before Oscar nominations come out. Razzie winners, chosen by the group’s roughly 600 voters, will be announced Feb. 26, the night before the Oscars.
But, before your teen rages too hard at this good hearted mocking of their favorite movie, remind them that Sandra Bullock won and Oscar and a Razzie in the same year last year, and graciously appeared at both shows to receive her accolades. We can only hope that the Twilight cast shows such a good sense of humor.
